Major HTHW piping installation in campus tunnel system coordinated with $20 million renovation project. Project required approximately 8,000 LF of 10" piping with multi-phase construction to maintain building services.
This major HTHW piping installation required careful coordination with a $20 million central campus renovation project. Design began in August 1997 and was completed in May 1998, with special emphasis on coordinating spatial relationships and routing of piping in the existing tunnel system.
A project cost estimate was prepared in August 1996 for installing HTHW piping in the tunnel and abandoning the existing direct bury system, subsequently submitted to the State of Colorado for funding approval.
The project required installation of approximately 8,000 LF of 10" piping for HTHW within the campus tunnel system. Additional services coordinated in the tunnel included:
Construction also included two valve vaults, an expansion loop, and approximately 30 LF of tunnel modifications.
The project was strategically split into three phases of construction to maintain HTHW piping to all buildings during construction. A central plant shutdown was coordinated and scheduled into the construction for switchover from the existing distribution system to the new system. A temporary boiler was installed to supply domestic hot water to the student family apartments during the switchover period.
Final Construction Cost: $1,676,498
Campus-wide study and replacement of critical steam and chilled water distribution piping. Project involved sophisticated hydraulic analysis to solve chilled water flow problems and included pre-cast concrete valve vaults.
