Design of new 2-mile steam and condensate piping distribution system with 28 valve vaults for Colorado's largest state prison, serving 26 buildings and 7,500 meals daily.
SEC designed a new steam and condensate piping distribution system for Sterling Correctional Facility, Colorado's largest state prison housing 2,500 inmates across 26 buildings. The high-pressure steam system provides building heat, domestic hot water, and steam to the kitchen for steam kettles serving 7,500 meals daily. Construction value is $17,834,452.
The new system totals 2 miles of piping and 28 valve vaults. Schedule 40 carbon steel is used for high-pressure steam piping and Schedule 80 steel for higher-pressure condensate piping. The factory-fabricated, pre-insulated piping system features polyurethane foam insulation with HDPE jacket and Class A conduit, plus pressure-testable joint enclosures. The revised routing avoids prison yards, reduces construction costs, and adds valve vaults for selective building isolation without full system shutdown.
SEC provided private utility locates, surveying, potholing, X-ray inspection of pre-cast concrete walls, phased array inspection of welded joints, detailed specifications, and methods of procedures coordination with prison staff. The project was designed in two phases due to state budget constraints.
